چکیده

We present new results for pulsating neutron stars. We have calculated the eigenfrequencies of the modes that one would expect to be the most important gravitationalwave sources: the fundamental fluid f -mode, the first pressure p-mode and the first gravitational-wave w-mode, for twelve realistic equations of state. From this numerical data we have inferred a set of “empirical relations” between the mode-frequencies and the parameters of the star (the radius R and the mass M). Some of these relation prove to be surprisingly robust, and we show how they can be used to extract the details of the star from observed modes. The results indicate that, should the various pulsation modes be detected by the new generation of gravitational-wave detectors that come online in a few years, the mass and the radius of neutron stars can be deduced with errors no larger than a few percent.

Gravitational Radiation from Pulsating White Dwarfs

Rotating white dwarfs undergoing quasi-radial oscillations can emit gravitational radiation in a frequency range from 0.1 − 0.3 Hz. Assuming that the energy source for the gravitational radiation comes from the oblateness of the white dwarf induced by the rotation, the strain amplitude is found to be ∼ 10 for a white dwarf at ∼ 50 pc. The galactic population of these sources is estimated to be ...

An Upper Bound from Helioseismology on the Stochastic Background of Gravitational Waves

The universe is expected to be permeated by a stochastic background of gravitational radiation of astrophysical and cosmological origin. This background is capable of exciting oscillations in solar-like stars. Here we show that solar-like oscillators can be employed as giant hydrodynamical detectors for such a background in the μHz to mHz frequency range, which has remained essentially unexplor...

Models of string cosmology predict a stochastic background of gravitational waves with a spectrum that is strongly tilted towards high frequencies. I give simple approximate expressions for spectral densities of the cosmic background which can be directly compared with sensitivities of gravitational wave detectors.

A Decision between Bayesian and Frequentist Upper Limit in Analyzing Continuous Gravitational Waves

Given the sensitivity of current ground-based Gravitational Wave (GW) detectors, any continuous-wave signal we can realistically expect will be at a level or below the background noise. Hence, any data analysis of detector data will need to rely on statistical techniques to separate the signal from the noise. While with the current sensitivity of our detectors we do not expect to detect any tru...

Triple Michelson Interferometer for a Third-Generation Gravitational Wave Detector

The upcoming European design study ‘Einstein gravitational wave Telescope’ represents the first step towards a substantial, international effort for the design of a third-generation interferometric gravitational wave detector. It is generally believed that third generation instruments cannot be installed into existing infrastructures but will require a new search for optimal detector sites. Con...
